aliens

I'm getting back on the writing wagon-horse-thing slowly. The manuscript is at 50k. If you had told me that I could do it, I'd agree that it was possible but doubtful I could spend more time on yet another solitary hobby. Well, I want this story done justice. I have a small word count goal this month, though, because I'm working on some book recommendations on a deadline and am playing Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U because I enjoy getting slaughtered by alien squirrel-kittens and sauropods when I try to place observational probes. It's eating almost all of my writing time. The other eater of time is a persistent fatigue dealing with my health and medications.

Review a mid-series book? Am I mad? Often the first book gets the most reviews, but I think it's worth commenting on later ones so people know whether they want to stay along for the ride.

The time and place

Most of the book takes place on planet Ithiss-Tor, the homeworld of the insectoid Ithtorians, who can disguise themselves as anyone. I assume the setting is far future or parallel universe.

The suspension of disbelief

There are all kinds of aliens, mostly bipedal. There’s AI and pretty high technology. Space navigation is done by a pilot and Jumper, a person who can access grimspace, the woobly hyperspace that ships go through to get to different stars and planets. I believe it’s what makes FTL possible. Jumpers tend to burn out and die with little or no warning.

The time and place

The future, on a habitable planet unknown to the protagonists

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Humanity found it could breed with a species of alien it found called the Zh Cle’. Said aliens have some insectoid features, which made some humans totally freak out and start genetically engineering ‘perfected’ humans (called Puregens) to keep up with the half-breeds. Now those not Puregen are discriminated against and not allowed on some worlds.

The time and place

Centax, a space colony in our future.

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Long ago, people fled Earth after nuclear war, scattering its treasures and museum pieces everywhere. There are several humanoid races around, perhaps all descended from us. The Centaxians put cybernetic implants in all of their citizens to make them better/faster/stronger, but more implants tend to deaden emotions.

The time and place

New Orleans, some time in our future

The suspension of disbelief

New Orleans was pretty much wiped out by Hurricane Chen fifty years before the story. I would put money on that actually happening, though. The bulk of the city was lifted into the air so that it’s divided into New Orleans Old and New Orleans New (or dirtside). Some very humanoid aliens come to earth every so often. The aliens have nanites and AI technology, but Earth does not. Instead we have skimmers, which seem to be flying cars.

The quick summary

Dzholh “Joe” Ban!drn, a Garradian, and Violet Baker, NOPD are sent to retrieve some people who haven’t evacuated NOO when there’s a Category 5 hurricane bearing down on them. They go between bands of the storm, but bad data throws them into the heart of it with equipment in poor condition. Our heroes attempt to survive the storm and an evil trying to sabotage them.

Note: This novella contains triggering subjects: rape, murder, being drugged and helpless.

The time and place

The Inc-Su Refuge and the space station Seclusion, our far future or an alternate version thereof.

The suspension of disbelief

Some races have psychic powers. Space travel exists. Humanoid aliens exist and have different life spans. Technology is advanced: regeneration gel baths, practice combat drones, cybernetic implants, genetic experimentation.

The short summary

Tyree is from a race that can kill people with sex. Said race makes clone creches, and Tyree is asked to stand in for another member of her creche to complete a diplomatic agreement. Mirsee did not have Tyree's assassin abilities and lived as a dignitary, marrying the human diplomat Zander D'joren. Tyree now must masquerade as Mirsee until the treaty is concluded. She develops romantic feelings for Zander, which add complications to her mission.

The place and time

United States of America, on Earth, in the near future. The area is called Sector Three.

The suspension of disbelief

Earth gets invaded by Not-Very-Near-Human aliens. Chaos and destruction ensue. Other Near-Human aliens (if I trust the cover art and description they are about as different as most early Star Trek aliens are from human) show up to fight them and are trying to live on earth with the humans. Most of the tech we know has been shut down or doesn't work, but the aliens are higher tech than we are.

The place and time

Deep space and on the jungle resort type planet Dantaralon. I imagine it's in the far future in our timeline, but it could be an alternate universe.

The suspension of disbelief

Interstellar travel exists! Humans and other races are in space, and some aliens are at war with humans.

Quick summary

Meg Antille is working on a cruise ship, and Simon "Red" Thomsill, recently retired soldier, has gotten a job aboard it to get to know her better. During a stopover on a nature preserve planet, things go ill. The ranger station is deserted, the big dangerous wild animals aren't being kept away as they should, and then the ships take off without their passengers. Simon, Meg, and the other passengers get pursued through the jungle by pirates and have to find a way to get off-planet safely. During the journey, Meg and Red develop a mutual respect to go with their mutual attraction.
