somewhere in time and space we touch asynchronously

The time and place

See the title. Lots of action happens on planet Lucifa, the Assassin's Guild base, but there's also some on a cowboy western planet and in space. As for time, unspecified, but in our far future.

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Long ago, people fled Earth after nuclear war, scattering its treasures and museum pieces everywhere. Those are now valuable. There are several humanoid races around, perhaps all descended from us. People live on both low and high-tech worlds.

I reviewed all the books I set out to from the raffle, plus some bonus Anna Hackett. Phew. I had several relatively uneventful weeks until my birthday, and then I slowed down a bit. Will I continue writing reviews? Yes, but at a slower pace.  Since I’m a member of Anna Hackett’s Launch Team, expect to see some more of that here. There are more authors I want to discover, and some authors I want to try something different by.

My taste in entertainment is not perfectly correlated to what I think is ‘good,’ nor does it dictate what I would recommend to others. I understand the desire for a quantitative score when reviewing material, but I don’t like giving one. To add to my difficulties, Amazon and Goodreads have different meanings for the same star ratings. I know that writing is difficult and I feel like I’m critiquing someone else’s child on the child’s personality. How can I be fair to writers and readers?

The time and place

The future, on a habitable planet unknown to the protagonists

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Humanity found it could breed with a species of alien it found called the Zh Cle’. Said aliens have some insectoid features, which made some humans totally freak out and start genetically engineering ‘perfected’ humans (called Puregens) to keep up with the half-breeds. Now those not Puregen are discriminated against and not allowed on some worlds.

The time and place

All over space, in space stations and on various planets. I'm not sure about the time.

The suspension of disbelief

Not-Very-Near Human alien races exist and populate the universe. A group called the Controllers has the power to indoctrinate people's brains, except for a race/group called the Shielders. Shielders are persecuted and live in off-grid planets and colonies, hiding from Controller influence.

The time and place

Centax, a space colony in our future.

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Long ago, people fled Earth after nuclear war, scattering its treasures and museum pieces everywhere. There are several humanoid races around, perhaps all descended from us. The Centaxians put cybernetic implants in all of their citizens to make them better/faster/stronger, but more implants tend to deaden emotions.

The time and place

I assume from the author’s blog that it’s our future, and the place is deep space on several radical ships and less awesome planets.

The suspension of disbelief

There are various humanoid races. Space travel exists, and spaceships have combat capability. There’s all sorts of cool technology around that I won’t spoil.

The quick summary

Sair’s been a tribute slave to another race since before adolescence. He manages to escape the palace where he serves, but needs a way offworld. He finds a beautiful prototype ship and convinces the captain, Drea Mennelsohn, to take him aboard and drop him off somewhere safer. As he grows more fascinated with Drea, he finds that she and her mission are more complicated than he could have guessed. Together they could change the fate of known space.

I started my new writing class, Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy, yesterday. I had a good experience with the Writing Short Stories class I took with the same instructor, Nils Osmar, and I figured some new  perspectives and other people's creativity would be inspiring. The class is full of people who haven't written much even though it says it's for all levels. Demographics are college-aged to middle-aged individuals with almost equal gender representation. I've noticed White, Asian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern students. I'm excited about people being beginners because it encourages Shoshin, a Zen concept that means 'beginner's mind.' We are eager to learn more and open to new ideas. Unfortunately there are lots of preconceptions about writing that filter down to the general populace that will restrict us. I hope to see raw ideas and foreign contortions of concepts.

The time and place

New Orleans, some time in our future

The suspension of disbelief

New Orleans was pretty much wiped out by Hurricane Chen fifty years before the story. I would put money on that actually happening, though. The bulk of the city was lifted into the air so that it’s divided into New Orleans Old and New Orleans New (or dirtside). Some very humanoid aliens come to earth every so often. The aliens have nanites and AI technology, but Earth does not. Instead we have skimmers, which seem to be flying cars.

The quick summary

Dzholh “Joe” Ban!drn, a Garradian, and Violet Baker, NOPD are sent to retrieve some people who haven’t evacuated NOO when there’s a Category 5 hurricane bearing down on them. They go between bands of the storm, but bad data throws them into the heart of it with equipment in poor condition. Our heroes attempt to survive the storm and an evil trying to sabotage them.

Note: This novella contains triggering subjects: rape, murder, being drugged and helpless.

The time and place

The Inc-Su Refuge and the space station Seclusion, our far future or an alternate version thereof.

The suspension of disbelief

Some races have psychic powers. Space travel exists. Humanoid aliens exist and have different life spans. Technology is advanced: regeneration gel baths, practice combat drones, cybernetic implants, genetic experimentation.

The short summary

Tyree is from a race that can kill people with sex. Said race makes clone creches, and Tyree is asked to stand in for another member of her creche to complete a diplomatic agreement. Mirsee did not have Tyree's assassin abilities and lived as a dignitary, marrying the human diplomat Zander D'joren. Tyree now must masquerade as Mirsee until the treaty is concluded. She develops romantic feelings for Zander, which add complications to her mission.
