The time and place:

About a thousand years from now, on the planet Nila Marbela, a beautiful vacation spot. Most of the action takes place on the campus of Optimal Polytechnic University.

The suspension of disbelief:

Humans have colonized many planets and developed space travel. Some humans have psychic powers, referred to as “minder talents.” These talents include mind control, healing, telekinetics, detection of other powers, and plenty more. Those who have them are often pressed into the Minder Corps of Citizen Protection Services: essentially the galactic police.

The time and place

Earth in our far future, as intimated by the title- it’s got all kinds of irradiated beasties and killer plants! The opening takes place on a jungle planet, Mazona V. There’s also some time aboard spaceships.

The suspension of disbelief

Nuclear war rendered Earth pretty much uninhabitable. The survivors escaped into space to found new colonies. Artifacts from Earth are considered valuable archaeological treasures.

Review a mid-series book? Am I mad? Often the first book gets the most reviews, but I think it's worth commenting on later ones so people know whether they want to stay along for the ride.

The time and place

Most of the book takes place on planet Ithiss-Tor, the homeworld of the insectoid Ithtorians, who can disguise themselves as anyone. I assume the setting is far future or parallel universe.

The suspension of disbelief

There are all kinds of aliens, mostly bipedal. There’s AI and pretty high technology. Space navigation is done by a pilot and Jumper, a person who can access grimspace, the woobly hyperspace that ships go through to get to different stars and planets. I believe it’s what makes FTL possible. Jumpers tend to burn out and die with little or no warning.

The time and place

See the title. Lots of action happens on planet Lucifa, the Assassin's Guild base, but there's also some on a cowboy western planet and in space. As for time, unspecified, but in our far future.

The suspension of disbelief

Space travel exists. Long ago, people fled Earth after nuclear war, scattering its treasures and museum pieces everywhere. Those are now valuable. There are several humanoid races around, perhaps all descended from us. People live on both low and high-tech worlds.

The time and place

All over space, in space stations and on various planets. I'm not sure about the time.

The suspension of disbelief

Not-Very-Near Human alien races exist and populate the universe. A group called the Controllers has the power to indoctrinate people's brains, except for a race/group called the Shielders. Shielders are persecuted and live in off-grid planets and colonies, hiding from Controller influence.

The time and place

I assume from the author’s blog that it’s our future, and the place is deep space on several radical ships and less awesome planets.

The suspension of disbelief

There are various humanoid races. Space travel exists, and spaceships have combat capability. There’s all sorts of cool technology around that I won’t spoil.

The quick summary

Sair’s been a tribute slave to another race since before adolescence. He manages to escape the palace where he serves, but needs a way offworld. He finds a beautiful prototype ship and convinces the captain, Drea Mennelsohn, to take him aboard and drop him off somewhere safer. As he grows more fascinated with Drea, he finds that she and her mission are more complicated than he could have guessed. Together they could change the fate of known space.

The time and place

The future, on various planets, spaceships, and nebulae. See the title.

The quick summary

Dr. Eos Rai, an astro-archaeologist at the Galactic Institute for Historical Preservation, is desperate to find Star’s End and a piece of the Mona Lisa. She can’t secure the Institute’s help, so she recruits a notorious band of treasure hunters, the Phoenix brothers. As they search, she gets involved with Dathan Phoenix, but to what end?

Note: This novella contains triggering subjects: rape, murder, being drugged and helpless.

The time and place

The Inc-Su Refuge and the space station Seclusion, our far future or an alternate version thereof.

The suspension of disbelief

Some races have psychic powers. Space travel exists. Humanoid aliens exist and have different life spans. Technology is advanced: regeneration gel baths, practice combat drones, cybernetic implants, genetic experimentation.

The short summary

Tyree is from a race that can kill people with sex. Said race makes clone creches, and Tyree is asked to stand in for another member of her creche to complete a diplomatic agreement. Mirsee did not have Tyree's assassin abilities and lived as a dignitary, marrying the human diplomat Zander D'joren. Tyree now must masquerade as Mirsee until the treaty is concluded. She develops romantic feelings for Zander, which add complications to her mission.

Lana's Comet cover image

The time and place

Saturn's moon Titan, several hundred years after our present

The suspension of disbelief

Humanity has advanced to space travel within the solar system, and we've been able to terraform several planets and moons. Also, we created a race of engineered emotionless clones which didn't work out so well.

The quick summary

Dr. Lana meets Cyprus, a surly but appealing OSA officer shortly before her training, and they agree to meet later for a date. Unfortunately, she's a new recruit under his supervision, and he is brutal to his trainees. There go those fun plans. He's mystified by Lana, as she's an older than average recruit who's an ex-Corp (Meash Corp) employee and a doctor with excellent credentials. She could be making a lot more money elsewhere. They get closer as he attempts to figure out her secrets and hijinks of several kinds ensue.

The place and time

Deep space and on the jungle resort type planet Dantaralon. I imagine it's in the far future in our timeline, but it could be an alternate universe.

The suspension of disbelief

Interstellar travel exists! Humans and other races are in space, and some aliens are at war with humans.

Quick summary

Meg Antille is working on a cruise ship, and Simon "Red" Thomsill, recently retired soldier, has gotten a job aboard it to get to know her better. During a stopover on a nature preserve planet, things go ill. The ranger station is deserted, the big dangerous wild animals aren't being kept away as they should, and then the ships take off without their passengers. Simon, Meg, and the other passengers get pursued through the jungle by pirates and have to find a way to get off-planet safely. During the journey, Meg and Red develop a mutual respect to go with their mutual attraction.
